Looking for a FREE patriotic quilt pattern for your weekend sewing? Well, I’ve got you covered! Take a look at this beauty that I created to share with you! I present to you, the Sugar Bomb Pop Quilt Block!

Fabric Inspiration

I was so inspired by these Art Gallery Fabrics to create this pattern. I created this as a quilt block pattern so you can use it in any project you like…looking for a quick project, then make 1 block and turn it into a pillow…need a table runner for your Independence Day celebration? Then make 3-4 blocks and BOOM! A beautiful table runner! Or are you ready for your next quilt project? I’ve got you covered there as well! The free printable pattern includes ideas and suggestions no matter what type of project you are looking for! So let’s get started!!

The Fabric & Quilt Block

The Sugar Bomb Pop quilt block is written for a 16 1/2″ unfinished block. You’ll need 1/8 yard of 5 fabrics plus 1/4 yard of a background fabric. Scraps would be perfect for this project or of course you can also use fabric from your stash or a new special bundle! I bought this beautiful Americana bundle of Art Gallery Fabrics from Elegante Virgule that I thought would be perfect in this project.

There are a few extra fabrics that I wanted to include, so the colorway used in the photos is a bit different than the pattern, but the idea is still the same!

For this pattern, I made 2 throw pillow covers and a wall quilt. I used the envelope-back method for my pillow covers. Check out my tutorial on making an envelope back for throw pillow covers! On one of my projects, I made a wall hanging that doubles as a table centerpiece, so I decided to use the Art Gallery Aligned Line Study for the binding. Isn’t it gorgeous?

The pattern is a really quick project, you will have it sewn together in no time! You’ll need a few half-square triangles, 2.5″ squares and a few background rectangles.

I recommend assembling your center star first. Here’s mine on my design wall before sewing. So beautiful all by itself, isn’t it?

Here’s a little quilters tip for you…

Take a look at the 2 spots where the pins are pointing. When I began quilting, these REALLY threw me off. I didn’t understand why I had a gap when I was joining my blocks together. I mistakenly though everything should line up. Well, guess what, my quilty friend, “gaps” like these are supposed to be there! You may have already known that, but if you didn’t, I may have just blown your mind! The space is your seam allowance! When you are sewing your blocks together, the space will be taken up by the seam allowance and your points will match perfect. I was shocked when I found that out, because it look so….wrong! But take a look at the block when it’s sewn together, it’s perfect! And I love a nice crisply pressed block!

Another easy part of this pattern are the 4 patch corner units. I love a pretty 4 patch! And I usually end up loving the front as much as I love the back. Strange I know…Need more tips on making 4 patch blocks? Check out my tutorial!

Another quilty tip for you…

Take a look at this section after sewing one of the side panels to a background rectangle. You’ll notice I had just a smidge that didn’t line up quite right. In my opinion, this is something that I would decide to trim and square my block up before I continuing assembling units. I have found that this just neatens the block up and eliminates any future “wonkiness” that might happen if I would have just kept sewing. You wouldn’t want to do this with too much excess fabric, if it would affect the overall measurement of your units. Here it didn’t affect the rest of my section.

Here are my sections on my design wall just waiting to be assembled!

Ta-da! My finished project! As I mentioned, I wanted to make a mini quilt that could also be used as a table centerpiece so I decided to add a 2″ border (from my background fabric) to my quilt block, added some straight line quilting and my beautiful binding.
